My best friend Sasha HATED her prom dress. She had been pushed to go to prom by her friend and after a visit to David's Bridal she ended up with a BLUE dress as her mother suggested instead of a RED dress that she had wanted.

Prom came and went as well as several years before the dress came back up in conversation. I was trying to find a dress for Sasha to use as the base of a victorian steampunk costume and she regaled me with her hatetred of the dress. The dress arrived at my house and then came to live in my husband's closet until the day when Sasha decided she wanted to be a DALEK. 
I told Sasha I would help her with whatever she wanted but she did realize the dress was already BLUE, she could just be a TARDIS. Her face lit up.
This was definitely possible. So while starring at the dress and it's original design we realized it had all this extra fabric just crossing over her front. She split the seem and removed the brooch to reveal what would become the inside of the TARDIS. After careful consideration she went with a Police Box choker and a light up tiara to mimic the top of the TARDIS. Windows were constructed from ribbon, felt, and ironing hem tape. The Pull to Open sign was a dark tshirt transfer. The interior was a drop cloth from Home Depot, laundered and washed with a light gold color. My husband, Andy drew the interior and coached Sasha with a paint by number technique. When the painting was done and dry Sasha transfused it into the dress with the edges hemmed. A few accessories like The Who British Flag Chuck Taylors and a key necklace, she was a complete princess. We took the dress to Boston's SciFi Fantasy convention Arisia and were overwhelmed by the response to the dress. People loved the dress with the door closed but as soon as she opened the door their jaws dropped.

Now she loves her prom dress. Who wouldn't? It's unfortunate that she couldn't actually wear this dress to her prom but I'm sure there will be other scifi related events for her to parade it around.
If you have a dress from your prom or a wedding just sitting in your closet taking up space consider donating it or transforming it into something that will make you happy. Just consider the base color and go crazy. You are only limited by you imagination and the cord on your glue gun. I really want a dress to sport when I'm with Sasha but I'm not sure I'm ready to rewear my wedding dress just yet, but oneday...

ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry I didn't stop and talk to Sasha in the lobby at Arisia. The costume was Brilliant! Even though I didn't see the inside. The tiara was an amazing finishing touch!

Not a fan of tumblr for that reason - seems to be full of people sharing images they have found without bothering to credit or link. So when I find content like that, I like to Google and find the original source, and link to it directly. Found your husband's page about the artwork he painted, and another site lead me here. So creative, love your artistic flair and your friend Sasha looks a million dollars.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering who did this! It's so well done and I have to say, I'm super jealous. I recently turned a friend's failed wedding dress(left at the altar, no fun) into Katniss' wedding dress from Catching Fire. My friend was breathless when it was done(She said I turned a 17k dollar mistake into a dress she'll never get rid of) and it wasn't even near the transformation that you did above. Bravo! I might have to commission one of these from you!
